Are my visitors bots?

Every Shopify store receives bot visits multiple times daily. Some originate from Shopify’s own performance-checking bots, while others come from ad networks verifying content compliance and site speed.

To determine if a session is bot-generated, follow these steps:

  1. Check IP addresses – Do the sessions share identical or similar IP addresses (matching first two number sets)? This suggests bots from the same data center.

  2. Use bot detection services – Run the IP through a tool like https://www.ipqualityscore.com/bot-management/bot-detection-check to assess data center likelihood.

  3. Verify IP location – Use https://www.ip2location.com/ to identify the session’s IP location. Services may indicate Google or Amazon data center ownership. Multiple IPs from the same city also suggest bot activity.

  4. Check operating system – Linux is the predominant OS for bot operations, so this may indicate automated traffic.
